ABOUT OUR FOUNDER, Naz Athina Kallel.
Born in Mombasa, Kenya, Naz has been calling San Diego home for over 25 years. She has founded a Photographic Safari Company in Kenya, designed Art Jewelry for Museums and Galleries and worked for a large financial institution before the dreaded diagnosis of Stage IV Head and Neck Cancer 6 years ago. Receiving the news of having to fight for her life and getting laid off from her job within an hour was a life-changing experience.
Having survived with the use of her Feeding Tube during her Cancer treatments, she developed a complicated relationship with food, what used to be the centerpiece of all life's celebrations, food now became an anxiety-producing emotion. After her recovery, she faced the new challenge of celebrating life and food again.
There was much motivation to think about how she was going to survive and support herself. Naz took a big leap, applied and got accepted as a Fellow into the prestigious StartUp Leadership Program in San Diego. There she began her new journey into the exciting world of start-ups.
In October of 2016, Naz launched San Diego's first Marketplace for Local Ugly and Excess Farm Produce. In one year, over 25000 pounds of food was delivered directly to Chefs Kitchen and Farmers were paid for food that would have otherwise remained unsold and perhaps gone to waste.
In October of 2017, Naz starts work on her new online startup venture, Save Good Food now aims to connect San Diego's Food and Beverage Community of Farmers, Chefs, Brewers, Winemakers and Artisan Food Makers to Buy, Sell, Collaborate and Invest in one another through a Classifieds Platform.
Naz is bootstrapping, living lean and green, and does most of the work herself to keep costs down. A home cook and devoted locavore, she loves hanging out with her rescue dogs, paddling in the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, advocating for head and neck cancer patients and mentoring female entrepreneurs.
